As exciting as it was to see the waterfalls, geyser, and the rest of the Golden Circle on our first day, our second day was that much better because we experienced something of a novelty around here….. sunshine! Not that the sun never peeks out, but according to the locals, getting days in a row of it is a rarity.
We were happy for our one day.
Solrun picked us up at 8:30 and we were a bit more energetic than the previous day after the flight and time difference. That was a good thing because we had a FULL day in front of us. It’s not that Iceland is overly large, (it’s about the size of West Virginia) it’s that there is a definite amount of driving need to get from good spot, to great spot, to incredible spot! It’s a good thing that the landscapes in between are noteworthy in their own right.
Our destination for the day was the South Shore which has Black Sand Beaches, cool Waterfalls, views of the Glaciers, and PUFFINS! Solrun did a magnificent job of ferrying us from place to place, skipping some for later in order to arrive at a spot earlier than the other tourons, and then getting us back there after those same had vacated!
It now sits innocently….. who me?
Combine lava being ground down by constant wave action with the ash and pumice of local eruptions, add a few million years and you get Black Sand some of which is as fine as the good stuff at the Jersey Shore!
Among other things they have a special gait that is determined by a chromosome, hence the careful handling of import/exports.
And besides that, they are very cute!
Yes, it looks burnt but I can assure you that it is not! It is made by folding activated charcoal powder into the flour.
So, not only is it unique and good tasting….. it is good for you!
Plus, being right next to the Black Sand beaches, it’s a marketing slam dunk!
And these guys are all over the place! This family was way up on a hill near a great waterfall which you will soon see!

No, that’s not a guy up to the left, it’s another Puffin, straight on.
This is the one we passed in the morning in order to get out to Vik by lunchtime and the travel back where there was a minimum of ‘persons of irritation’
